Treatment of significant bacteriuria including asymptomatic is required.

Significant bacteriuria with Group B Strep will be reported with antibiotic treatment options e.g. Sensitive: Amoxicillin,  Cefalexin. These results prompt treatment with an antibiotic for 7 days.

Group B Strep can occasionally be present in urine but not meeting criteria for significant bacteriuria  e.g. very low quantity or mixed with other organisms suggesting genital tract/perineal contamination.

This will be reported without an antibiotic sensitivity as “No significant growth including Strep agalactiae (Gp B Strep)” or “Mixed organisms probable contamination including Strep agalactiae (Gp B Strep)” with the comment “Growth from sample not significant for diagnosis of UTI, however, presence of Group B Strep has been reported as relevant for antibiotic prophylaxis in labour.”

These results DO NOT require immediate antibiotic treatment, however, presence should be recorded so that Group B Strep antibiotic prophylaxis is given at onset of labour.

n.b. Empirical antibiotic may still be indicated in these patients e.g. if patient has clinical symptoms of UTI
