Vaginal candidiasis in pregnancy

 

Antibiotic Recommendation

Clotrimazole pessary 500 mg once daily for up to 7 days

(During pregnancy the pessary should be inserted without using the applicator)

If there are vulval symptoms, consider use of topical clotrimazole 1% cream applied 2-3 times a day.

Alternative regimens:

Clotrimazole vaginal cream (10%) 5 g intravaginally at night. Dosing can be extended according to age and product licence.

Clotrimazole pessary 200 mg intravaginally at night for 7 consecutive nights.

(During pregnancy the pessary should be inserted without using the applicator)

Notes

For recurrent or resistant diseases seek specialist advice.

Fluconazole - manufacturer advises avoid in pregnancy.

Intravaginal and topical clotrimazole may damage latex condoms and diaphragms.

External creams need to be applied for seven days after symptoms have cleared.
