Introduction

Welcome to the Information for Wellbeing course.

Watch this video (duration 1min 55s) to hear North Ayrshire Libraries' feedback on the value of this course.

This course is funded by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) and the Scottish Government Self-Management and Health Literacy team. It is supported jointly by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC), the ALLIANCE, and the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI).

The course is a key deliverable from the Collective Force for Health and Wellbeing Action Plan. This plan aims to deliver library-led partnerships with the third sector, health and social care, to make libraries the “go-to” physical and virtual space for their communities to access health and wellbeing information, health literacy support and to get support in therapeutic use of reading.

This  course aims to build the skills and confidence of library and third sector staff in facilitating health literacy and reading for wellbeing, face to face and through remote technology. It  brings together three key elements:

  • the power of health and wellbeing knowledge
  • digital communication technology
  • human empathy and communication

-  to support resilience, recovery and renewal in response to COVID-19. A digital flyer to help you in raising awareness of the course is available here.

The course has a particular focus on enabling library and third sector staff to support people who may experience barriers to accessing health services and digital information. These are the groups who have been most heavily impacted by COVID - for example due to age, ethnicity and differing socio-economic status.
