Workbook exercise (2): Consolidating your learning from this module

Choose one of the two scenarios below. Based on what you have learned through this module, outline what you would do and why you have chosen this course of action.

Scenario  1

Nadia is a 35 year old single woman who is struggling with work pressures and a relationship break-up. She asks for your help in finding information about depression and anxiety.

As you are talking, you notice there are long thin red marks on her arm which look like razor cuts. You wonder if she is self-harming.

Write in your workbook what options for action you might consider. What would you choose to do, and why?

Scenario 2

Sammy, who lost his wife a year ago to a brain tumour, and believes the doctors were too slow to diagnose it, becomes increasingly agitated during the session. You speak to him calmly and ask if he wants to take some time out. After a quiet spell, he suddenly starts shouting with anger and thumping his fist on the table.

What action do you take?
