Stopping lithium

Warning

Stopping lithium

  • 6 months treatment is considered an adequate trial to establish effectiveness.
  • Discontinuation should be planned except in cases of toxicity. Abrupt withdrawal increases the risk of relapse.
  • Reduce the dose gradually over at least 4 weeks, preferably up to 3 months.
  • Continue to monitor lithium levels whilst reducing the dose.
