Patients who have been admitted to hospital with an ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and who are unable to walk without the help of another person should:

  1. Have Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) devices applied for up to 30 days until they can walk, are discharged, refuse IPC or develop adverse effects.
  2. Not be fitted with graduated compression stockings.
  3. Not routinely be given anticoagulants for VTE prophylaxis unless it is indicated for some co-morbidity e.g. surgery.
