Daily Care

 If client is anxious, encourage relaxation such as taking deep breaths.

 Advise a smoke-free environment.

 Help client to an upright position in loose clothing if possible.

 Use a room fan or open a window to improve ventilation.

 Offer a hand-held fan.

 Help client to sit down to shower.

 Provide a raised chair and toilet seat.

 Use wheelchair.

 Where client has oxygen available, encourage them to use this before walking.

Contact the GP, District Nurse or Coordinator if there are any changes that cause concern.

Understanding breathlessness

Experiencing breathlessness can be very frightening. It can cause anxiety that increases the breathlessness. It is a common symptom following heart/ lung disease and for patients with advanced cancer.
