Diabetes, Women NOT Requiring Insulin, Diabetes Management, Labour and Delivery (361)

GENERAL MANAGEMENT

In women with gestational diabetes controlled by diet or diet and metformin or glibenclamide, management during labour should be as per normal protocols with the addition of :

  1. discontinue metformin or glibenclamide when in labour or at induction of labour or when fasting
  2. Check capillary blood glucose every 2 hours
    If  capillary blood glucose >6.0 mmol/l  then check hourly
    If  capillary blood glucose >7 mmol/l on two occasions or  >10.0 mmol/l  then consider commencement of sliding scale (see protocol for labour in women requiring insulin)  

**DURING LABOUR TARGET CAPILLARY BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL IS UNDER 7MMOL/L**
